Papstein & Gohrisch

Do not let the small number of peaks (only 9) of this two areas fool you. You’ll be surprised with the great amount of memorable climbs found on this rocks! Here, get ready to cruise on solid well-featured rock. Most of the times you’ll probably move between pockets and jugs while trying the long athletic moves on vertical or overhanging ground. Those comfortable with this style of face-climbing will find a great playground in this area. On the other hand, it has little to offer in terms of crack and friction climbing. Most of the best routes are in the VII-VIII range, but some peaks will have plenty of easier routes, well suited for children or beginners.

A car is ideal to reach Papstein & Gohrisch, since there is a parking lot right in the middle of the area. Otherwise, a major downside is the relatively long hike from Bad Schandau or Königstein (a little less than an hour). Luckily, once there all the peaks are close together so you can enjoy the climbing without a lot of walking around during the rest of the day. For extended visits, its possible to sleep over in the huge and “comfortable” cave Lichterhöhle. And if you’re tired of your regular crag-food or simply do not want to carry it around, there’s an excellent restaurant at the top of Papstein.

Currently there is 2 peak description for this area:

  1. Papst
  2. Grosse Hunskirche
